Strong Babies Start on Their Tummies

Infant Love and Attention

Tummy time it’s a phrase that can make new parents and even childcare educators feel nervous. Questions like, “Am I doing this right?” or “Why does my baby cry every time?” are completely normal. The good news is, with a little patience and the right mindset, tummy time can become one of the most enjoyable and important parts of your baby’s day.

Think of Tummy Time Like a Baby Workout

Just like adults need to build strength through exercise, babies need tummy time to strengthen their neck, shoulder, and core muscles. These muscles are essential for milestones like rolling, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking. According to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, even a few minutes at a time makes a difference.

Start Sooner Than You Think

Tummy time can begin as early as your baby’s first day home. You can start with “tummytotummy” sessions laying your baby on your chest. This not only builds strength but also promotes bonding and eye contact. For more details on safe sleep and tummy time, the American Academy of Pediatrics provides great guidance for parents.

Make Tummy Time Fun and Engaging

Not every baby enjoys tummy time right away. Try short and playful sessions throughout the day. Sing songs, place colorful toys or a mirror nearby, or get down on the floor face to face with your baby. The goal is consistency, not perfection. Visit HealthyChildren.org’s guide for even more ideas to keep it engaging.

Why It Matters

Because babies sleep on their backs for safety, they spend a lot of time facing up. Tummy time helps prevent flat spots and supports healthy physical and brain development. For additional information check out CDAClass.org’s Tummy Time blog.

Your baby’s journey toward independence starts right on their tummy. Stay patient, stay consistent, and remember, you’re building strength one little push-up at a time.
